We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Lomelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Starting Darl + co only made sense as the next step. When I was in college, I created my first blog, MyStyleBoss, that focused on bringing my audience curated list of styles they can wear to their listed event with consideration to their most confident body features. I later retired the site because I no longer knew how to care for the service when it grew too fast for me. A few years later, I started Millennial Going Down. This time I focused on lifestyle and dedicated it as a resource to others millennials who seek answers to their evolving life questions. I began to grow my audience list and most of these engaging voices came from millennial women who were also trying to create their own path. With a large and loyal audience base, I knew I could monetize my blog, however using the tried-and-true methods of affiliates and ad’s, I wanted to create something that was just mine. I started putting together masterclasses such as Stocks & Investing, Digital Marketing and Secrets to the Publishing World. Although, they incredible resources that I am proud to be a part of, it didn’t fulfill my passion, fashion. I decided to create a brand under Millennial Going Down and curate styles made for strong women who aren’t afraid of wearing flirty fashion.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Darl+Co is a curated boutique that brings flirty fashion and delicate styles to the strong women around us. It started from the idea of reviving my blog, MyStyleBoss, but with the notion that I no longer wanted to write about what people could wear – I wanted to show them. I have always been taught that women can be strong. Women can be bosses and they do everything that men can. And I have been lucky to grow up in a time and place that has physically shown me examples of these women I could emulate. However, these women I desired to become were always dressed in styles that mimicked their male counterparts. And as much as I admired their talent and education, I wanted to show other little girls around me that you can most certainly be a leader and CEO while wearing pink and dresses. Being feminine and being an Executive are not mutually exclusive.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in LA, so finding things to do is an endless task, really. No trip to Southern California can truly begin without a burger from In-N-Out and a stop at the beach. My favorite are down south by Orange County. But if I had to highlight places to take my friends, I’d state the following: – Disneyland, of course! – Santa Monica pier and an afternoon hike at Griffith Observatory – A day trip to Catalina Island with the plans of parasailing. You never know, we could spot a few sea creatures to and from. – Hollywood is always fun for newcomers – Rodeo drive with a coffee stop at Alfred’s
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents deserve all the credit for all the risks I have taken. My first blog started because my dad encouraged me to build something of my own, even if it was just going to remain as a hobby. Sure, I ultimately “gave up” on that site. But it also encouraged me to start my second blog when I missed writing and providing a service. Then when there was growth in my second blog, they once again encouraged me to put all my experience in Marketing to make this thing of mine a real thing. Then one more time when I expressed interest in building Darl+Co, they backed my project by promoting the name to all our friends and family. They are just as responsible for this success and I thank them for never putting down my crazy ideas.
